The Book?

I was gifted this book on my birthday two years ago and to this day, it’s a very powerful and easy-to-read book that sheds light on the topic of race. Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race gives you an insight on what it’s like being Black British in the UK and how the country has viewed people like me from the beginning Windrush generation to the pandemic we currently live in (the World Cup, missing Black people and vaccinating countries like Africa). It made me realise these microaggressions and stereotypes have been set in motion for others to play on and have treated Black people so negatively for centuries. When will this subside? Who knows but this book is supposed to teach people why its important, but also why sometimes it’s hard to talk to White people about race and equality.

Nevertheless, the book’s best chapters to read are Histories, Fear of A Black Planet and Race and Class. Eddo-Lodge brilliantly writes in a way that educates her readers but also makes them look at Brexit Wasteland – or the UK – for the way racism has been not as upfront as the US and more likely to be brushed off as “it wasn’t meant like that!/It’s a joke!” It’s brushed off, even when it’s offensive and clearly racist.

The Spicy Dish?

Being Black-British, we tend to grow up, cook and crave dishes that we had in our childhood. If I grew up with more Nigerian friends, I would have loved to try Suya Spiced Baby Back Ribs. Suya is a beef skewer with a smoky but spicy taste. It’s popular in West Africa and the mixture of spices and additives make up the Suya marinade (called Yaji) that are added onto it. Jazzmine from Dash of Jazz has kindly allowed me to share her recommendation for Nyam with Ny readers to try out.

It’s one of her best recipes that allows you to make it at home too. Suya Spiced Baby Back Ribs is a spicy dish that can be easy to eat at any dinner or party and goes well with the book for being a balance of culture, relevance and ease of eating.
