Maras Biber from Arasta Bazaar

Maras Biber from Arasta Bazaar

Read Time:53 Second

Maras Biber or Maras Hot Chilli Flakes derives from Kahramanmaraş, one of Turkey’s cities that’s affected by the Turkey-Syria earthquake in February 2023. Unlike the dark maroon colour of Isot Biber, Maras is more of a visible flaming red.

When I went to Arasta Bazaar, I managed to get a hold of a large quantity of this spice and do not regret it. Although it’s described as a medium-heat pepper, Maras is the one that was stuck on my tongue from the moment I tried it in the bazaar. The shop seller advised this spice could be used for anything such as kebabs, stews and dishes with lamb in it and I plan to in the near future.

For now, I’ve used it to replace other chillies and peppers in dishes such as Scotch Bonnet Pepper Shrimp and Chilli Chicken Ramen. If you’re ever in Istanbul, please go to this bazaar and pick up some Maras Biber. It’s the furthest shop at the far right end if you’re coming from the The Blue Mosque area.
